The Recreation Internship is a full time position, working 40 hours per week for 13 weeks. The internship includes working within the Kids Club to provide programs and events for the guests of the resort and to enhance the experience of younger guests. Programs include the weekly Duck Race, Family Bingo, and a simple game of kickball, just to name a few. Resort Ambassadors within the Kids Club also serve as supervisors for guests ages 4 to 12 years while they are checked into the Kids Club, providing fun, safe playtime. Interns also work within the River Bluff Water Experience where interns take care of towels, serve as a general pool attendant, provide assistance at the front gate, and serve as a cabana attendant.
During the course of the internship the interns are given a final project to fulfill in teams. The projects vary, but all revolve around the Department of Recreation at the JW Marriott San Antonio and help them solve a problem or fulfill a need of some sort. Interns are also required to attend intern seminars held by the Human Resources Department.
This was a paid internship at $11.40 an hour. Room and board were not provided, but they did provide help with finding apartments offering a 3 month lease and they provided the name of a furniture rental company to furnish the apartments. To help with the process of room & board, the internship coordinator sent out an email to all the interns with the names and contact information of all the interns entering the program. That way the students could find roommates to help lower the cost of renting an apartment.
With the internship came the opportunity to shadow other departments within the resort, to speak to upper level management, and to receive a recommendation to apply for the Marriott Voyager program. The Voyager program is a program designed for recent graduates which focuses on leadership and development. Networking is the other benefit which came from this internship. Not only do you have a network with the other interns, but also the associates you work with, the supervisors, upper level management, and the guests you serve.
Marriott International requires that interns are current or recently graduated students. An online application through Marriott is required, along with an interview with a University Recruiter. Once offered the position you must give consent to a background check and also complete a drug test. You are also required to sign the contract of employment for the internship in order to accept.
The ability to move massive towel bins, working with changing weather conditions, and learning how to do a quick turnover between programs are just a few of the new skills I acquired. An achievement of mine was helping the Kids Club to increase sales of a product by recommending a new way to promote the product in my final project report.
